On Howard Stern’s radio show Wednesday, Larry King piled on Piers Morgan following his demotion at CNN from primetime host to sometime interviewer, comparing his “mixed emotions” to the feelings you’d get if “your mother-in-law goes over the cliff in your new car,” adding that he never thought "Britisher" Morgan was a good hire to begin with.

Morgan replaced King in 2011, filling the 9 p.m. slot for three years. However, due to increasingly lower ratings—what many blame on his increasingly more frequent gun control segments—CNN decided to make a move. After an aborted attempt at testing replacements for Morgan, the news outlet gave up on the nightly show concept altogether, filling it instead with a mixture of pre-produced programming, including documentaries.

On Stern’s show Wednesday, King revealed that he had “mixed emotions” about his replacement’s demise:

The best definition of mixed emotions: Your mother-in-law goes over the cliff in your new car. The mix was I thought they made a mistake in the Piers hire. I thought it was a mistake, one, to hire a Britisher in prime time and, two, I thought that he made himself too much part of the show...

King expounded on his point about Morgan’s overemphasis of himself on the show:

Too much I. I always said, if you turn on an interview show on television, 95 percent of the time you should see the guest. If 95 percent of the time you see the host, there’s something wrong with that.

King stated that though it “wasn’t my kind of show,” that Morgan was always friendly enough to him when he made appearances:

He was nice to me. I went on his show two or three times. He wasn’t unfriendly to me. It just wasn’t my type of show.

In the interview, King also said he thought American Idol’s Ryan Seacrest would have been a far more successful replacement for him than Morgan.
