Dr. Mary Travis Bassett, New York City public health commissioner, was among the officials on hand at tonight's late evening press converence regarding the new case of Ebola that has been discovered in New York City. Also taking questions were Mayor Bill de Blasio and Governor Cuomo.
Bassett went into details about the movements of the patient, a doctor with Doctors Without Borders, from the time he likely contracted the illness to when he was quarantined at Bellevue hospital.
After treating Ebola patients in West Africa, Dr. Craig Spencer returned to the United States, via Europe, to no particular special screening and absolutely no monitoring other than his own. He interacted with other people, took the subway (lines A, 1 and L), and even went to a bowling alley. He is now in quarantine.
Dr. Bassett states that this is all working exactly how it should.
It was noted that the doctor reported no breach of protocols while treating Ebola patients. It is not known at what point or by what method he was infected. The same remains true for the two nurses infected in Dallas.
