Houston Pastors Send Message: ‘Don’t Mess with the Pulpits of America’

Sunday, Houston-area religious leaders gathered together for “I Stand Sunday,” an event held in part in reaction to the initial subpoena of five pastors’ communication, including sermons, that dealt with homosexuality and a recent transgender non-discrimination ordinance. “Don’t mess with the pulpits of America,” said Grace Community Church’s Dr. Ed Young to enthusiastic applause.

Last month the City of Houston initially subpoenaed the sermons, a move at first endorsed by Mayor Annise Parker, who called the sermons “fair game” if they addressed the issues surrounding the ordinance, but after public backlash—including the office being inundated with Bibles—Parker backed off the order.

The five pastors who received the subpoenas offered brief remarks at the event Sunday, focusing on the growing threat of political tyranny in regard to religious freedom and declaring that they would stand united together against attacks on the church.

The senior pastor of the Vietnamese Baptist Church, Huynh, issued a similar warning, saying he sees the “same marching boot of tyranny” at work today in America as had marched through Vietnam.

Another speaker, Southern Baptist Convention President Dr. Ronnie Floyd, said it was time for the church to “wake up from our slumber,” adding that the “greatest problem” the church faces is spiritual rather than political. “We must get our lives right with the Lord,” said Floyd. “It is time we repent.”

The event offered participants to do just that, inviting attendees to kneel and pray for repentance and nationwide revival.

The highest profile figure in attendance was Duck Dynasty’s Phil Robertson, who said America was founded on Christian teachings. In reference to the city’s ordinance allowing transgender men to use women’s restrooms and vice versa, Robertson joked, “For all you ladies in Texas, trust me when I tell you this: When you’re seated in your restroom, putting on your Maybelline, when I need to take a leak, I’m not going there.”
