Houston Mayor: Sermons Opposing City Law ‘Fair Game

"If the 5 pastors used pulpits for politics, their sermons are fair game."

Houston Mayor Annise Parker responded to a motion filed against the City of Houston for subpoenaing all sermons dealing with homosexuality or herself by declaring Tuesday night that if pastors use their “pulpits for politics” their sermons are "fair game.”

Parker, the first openly gay mayor of a major U.S. city, demanded this week that five Houston area pastors turn over all of their sermons related to homosexuality, gender identity, or herself for inspection by the city. The Alliance Defending Freedom immediately filed a motion to block the subpoenas, calling the move an “inquisition” and an attempt by Parker to silence the ministers and portray them as anti-gay bigots.

The five pastors issued the subpoena were part of a petition drive against the HERO Act, a “non-discrimination” ordinance passed by the city in June that includes allowing men to use the ladies room and vice versa. Though the petitioned earned over 50,000 signatures, the city tossed it out for alleged "irregularities."
