Office of Houston Mayor Flooded With Bibles After Sermon Subpoena

As many as 1,000 sent to mayor’s office so far

The office of Houston Mayor Annise Parker is being flooded with Bibles, as many as 1,000 having arrived so far, according to the mayor’s spokesman. The move—inspired by conservative leaders, including Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), Mike Huckabee and Glenn Beck—is an act of protest against Parker’s subpoena of the sermons of five local pastors who opposed a new transgender non-discrimination ordinance.

Parker, the first openly gay mayor of a major U.S. city, caused widespread outrage earlier this month when her office subpoenaed the sermons of five local pastors who were part of a petition to create a referendum vote on the new city transgender non-discrimination ordinance, nicknamed the “bathroom bill” because it in part allows males to use female bathrooms and vice versa.

Though Parker clearly supported the subpoena at first, after widespread outrage, she reversed course, her office announcing that a more “narrow” range of documents from the pastors would be required in the legal actions surrounding the petition.

In response, last week Fox News host and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee called for "every pastor in America” to “send her your sermons," and for his viewers to "send her a Bible." Cruz and Beck voiced similar calls for acts of protest.

As a Houston local news outlet reports, the mayor’s office admitted Monday that the calls were being met. Parker acknowledged that her office was collecting “some” Bibles, but her spokesman later told reporters that as many as 1,000 Bibles had arrived at the office so far.

Parker attempted to diffuse the situation Monday by saying she believes the Bible protest is a “very productive way” for citizens to express their disagreement with the city’s legal actions:

"Actually, I think it was a very productive way for folks who disagreed with our legal strategy to express that disagreement and I'm happy to share the Bibles with those who may want them," Parker said.

The mayor said she has instructed her office to donate the Bibles to local churches.
