Actor Johnny Depp casually joked about assassinating President Trump on Thursday night. Now the White House has called on Hollywood to condemn his despicable comments. The crickets have been serenading us ever since.
“I’m not insinuating anything – by the way, this will be in the press and it will be horrible – but when was the last time an actor assassinated a president?” Depp said before a crowd of fans. "Trump needs help."
“President Trump has condemned violence in all forms and it’s sad that others like Johnny Depp have not followed his lead,” a White House official said in a statement to ABC News reporter Katherine Faulders.
The White House then called on Hollywood to show some integrity by denouncing this rhetoric.
“I hope that some of Mr. Depp’s colleagues will speak out against this type of rhetoric as strongly as they would if his comments were directed to a Democrat elected official,” he said.
Following the outrage, Depp has now apologized for the joke, saying he intended no malice.
"It did not come out as intended, and I intended no malice. I was only trying to amuse, not to harm anyone,” the actor said in a statement to People on Friday.
