Sharpton: Republicans Blame Single Moms for Poverty

Ignoring statistics that show married families are richer emotionally and financially, Sharpton attacks Bachmann and Gohmert for sharing their views on the war on poverty.

Al Sharpton has continued his support of an increase of the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour and often discusses the "war on poverty" on his MSNBC show, Politics Nation.

On Thursday's show he said Republicans like Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) and Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) are not supportive of single mothers and are blaming single moms for the impoverished in America today.

This isn't about politics, it's about people! It's personal! And while this president is speaking passionately about being raised by a single mom, Republicans are blaming single mothers for poverty in America.

Sharpton then showed an image of a statement from Bachmann talking about poverty persisting when federal government rewards people who do not get married and then played a video of Gohmert sharing a story of a young teen mom who was encouraged to drop out of high school and have a baby so she could get benefits. Al Sharpton said,

Single moms don't deserve to be demonized! And if the GOP is serious about fixing poverty, they need to change their rhetoric, and get their facts straight.

Sharpton himself is ignoring numerous studies that show that the children of married parents are more likely to attend and finish a bachelors degree in college, which often leads to better job opportunities. Additionally, of the over 40% of children who are born to unwed mothers in the United States today, about half of them are living in poverty. Republicans are not blaming single moms for poverty, they are just pointing out the obvious facts.
