On Monday's Politics Nation, Al Sharpton conveniently talked about everything from Bridgegate to unemployment benefits extensions but never mentioned the breaking news that he was an FBI informant on multiple cases for many years. The Smoking Gun revealed after investigating FBI documents that Sharpton had, despite frequent denials, been an informant for the FBI.
The article revealed that Sharpton had carried a recording device hidden in a briefcase to record New York mobsters, and added that his relationship with the Federal Bureau of Investigation started in the 1980s and according to The Smoking Gun spanned "several years."
Sharpton ignored the breaking news and did not address the story on his MSNBC show Monday. Instead, he talked about almost every other news story of the day and then spent a long segment, over eight minutes, promoting his non-profit's conference being held in New York City this week.
Sharpton welcomed Marc H. Morial from National Urban League and Sherrilyn Ifill from the NAACP Legal Defense fund to discuss how last year's Supreme Court decision on voting rights, voter ID laws, and the United States Justice system is affecting African-Americans. At the start and finish of the segment Sharpton informed his audience about his National Action Network's annual conference in NYC and reminded them that President Obama is one of his speakers.
MSNBC's Hardball host Chris Matthews, Attorney General Eric Holder and New York's Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo are also featured speakers at this year's NAN conference. Ticket prices are only available upon request.
