During a Q&A session hosted by Tumblr, Obama vented his frustration over the lack of action to pass stricter gun laws following the Sandy Hook Massacre.
Obama said that his “biggest frustration (as president) so far is the fact that this society has not been willing to take some basic steps to keep guns out of the hands of people who can do just unbelievable damage. We're the only society, the only developed country on earth, where this happens and it happens now once a week, and it’s a one-day story.”
The president said that the country has a history of gun rights and that he supports gun rights, but still sees a need for harsher gun laws.
“I respect gun rights but the idea that, for example, we couldn’t get a background check bill in — it makes no sense.”
Segueing to Congress, Obama said that without the public’s desire to change the gun laws, Congress cannot do anything, because of the NRA.
He said, “If public opinion does not demand change in Congress, it will not change. Most members of Congress — I have to say to some degree this is bipartisan — are terrified of the NRA.”
