Matthews: Republicans Gain Votes by Portraying Obama as 'Communist Infiltrator from East Africa'

After arguing earlier in the show that conservatives try to paint Obama as "the dark other," Matthews finished his show Wednesday by continuing to press the issue that southern voters are racist and that right-wing Republicans try to appeal to their racism, feeding them the notion of the president as "a secret communist infiltrator from east Africa."

During the final segment of Hardball the MSNBC host often shares his thoughts about a piece of news he has discussed earlier in the show. On Wednesday, he revisited the comments made by Ted Nugent about President Obama and explained his opinion about why Greg Abbott included the classic rock musician in a campaign stop.

Matthews took issue with comments by Nugent calling Obama a communist and "mongrel" and compared them to Rep. Joe Wilson yelling "you lie" during Obama's State of the Union, arguing that people many on the right still question whether or not Obama was elected "legitimately." He then urged Texas voters to not reject Nugent and Abbott:

Like weeds they come back every year. Politicians who think the easy way to grab the hard right voter is to feed them the notion that the president of the United States as a secret communist infiltrator from east Africa. Well with spring coming it might be a good idea for the voters of Texas to do what you do with weeds. Pull 'em, and throw 'em in the compost pile.

Abbott has never claimed that he thinks President Obama is an illegitimate president and, on Wednesday, said he invited Nugent on the campaign trail simply to highlight his opponent Wendy Davis's opposition of the 2nd Amendment.
