In an interview with TruthRevolt’s Ben Shapiro on 770 KTTH Wednesday, Fox News national security correspondent Jennifer Griffin reported that despite the calls for policy changes due to the string of shootings at military installations, the Department of Defense will not alter its current regulations banning firearms on bases.
Shapiro: There have been a lot of calls by folks in Congress, there was a call this morning from Sarah Palin, for a change in the military’s policy with regards to firearms on bases. And obviously in other countries around the world, there are military bases in which carrying your gun is actually mandatory. Has there been any talk that you’ve heard in Congress or in the halls of the White House about changing the regulations in regard to military men and women being able to carry weapons in case something like this happens again?
Griffin: In fact, I just received a statement from the Pentagon. .... On the record, Colonel Steve Warren tells us that after the 2009 Ft. Hood incident and after the Navy Yard shooting last year, there was a DOD review of whether to arm military personnel and civilians on bases. And in fact, this is a quote, “DOD does not support arming all personnel.” And they are not going to change that ... regulation at this point in time. The directive basically states that they will have MPs who are armed and there are certain individuals who have exemption and are allowed to be armed if the commanding general thinks they need to be armed, but in essence there is not consideration being given to changing those regulations at this point.
In response to the Navy Yard shooting in 2013, the Pentagon conducted a review of its security measures, determining that the shooting was preventable but pointed to lapses in security clearance review as the primary issue.
