A private thought of former President George W. Bush was made known in a Politico story entitled, "Inside the GOP's Shadow Convention."

Earlier this year, Bush met with nearly 1,000 staffers and aides from his administration for a reunion in Dallas. But underlying the party atmosphere, Politico reports, the former president admitted some personal concern over the state of politics. Surrounded by his closest advisers, Bush reportedly said:

"I’m worried that I will be the last Republican president.”

Politico's article about the "shadow convention" alleges that "the party's elders and elite" are, behind the scenes, laying "the foundation to rebuild [the party] post-Trump."

The story quotes Mitt Romney's former chief strategist, Stuart Stevens:

"There’s a school of thought that Trump, who’s gonna get crushed, will somehow teach the party a lesson and they’ll get it out of their system. I don’t have confidence in that.”

Alex Conant, a Republican strategist and advisor to Marco Rubio, said, "The day after the election we’ll get back to being the anti-Clinton party, which we’re actually good at being.”

According to The Washington Post, Bush's approval since his presidency has increased among Americans, citing a popularity on par with Bill Clinton.

As HotAir notes, Bush is not attendance at this year's Republican convention. He has not backed Donald Trump.
