Feds: We Haven't Forgotten Cliven Bundy

“There is an ongoing investigation and we are working diligently to ensure that those who broke the law are held accountable."

Though Cliven Bundy has largely fallen out of the news cycle since the end of the standoff and the release of his controversial remarks on African-Americans, federal and state authorities have made clear that they have not forgotten the recalcitrant rancher.

Over the last week the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and Nevada law enforcement have ratcheted up the rhetoric concerning April’s Bundy Ranch standoff, both maintaining that the rancher broke the law and must be held accountable.

Though the federal government backed down in April in the face of potential violence as militia members converged on Bundy’s ranch to protect his private property from further confiscation, they are insisting now that they will find a way legally to exact justice. The BLM told AP this weekend that they are “aggressively” pursuing a legal punishment, a spokesman saying, “There is an ongoing investigation and we are working diligently to ensure that those who broke the law are held accountable.”

Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie holds a similar position, telling the Los Vegas Review-Journal last week that he believes Bundy and his supporters “stepped over the line,” and consequences should follow: “If you step over that line, there are consequences to those actions," said Gillespie. "And I believe they stepped over that line. No doubt about it. They need to be held accountable for it.”

As MSNBC reports, the matter is still contentious even among authorities, with Sheriff Gillespie maintaining that the federal government badly overreached in its handling of the situation, while the BLM blames him for backing down from the crowd control operation and trying to "rewrite the details of what occurred."
