“Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim” is the common Arabic phrase that Robert Bergdahl, the father of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, uttered in Pashtu at a White House press conference with Barack Obama by his side.
The translation of the phrase reads “In the name of God, the merciful, the compassionate,” and it’s brewing up a storm on the Internet.
The debate revolves around the idea that Bergdahl has “claimed” the White House for Islam.
Klye Becker of the Independent Journal Review writes, “There may be an unknown explanation for why Robert Bergdahl might say this at the press conference. It may have been another ‘condition’ of his son’s release; yet, we can’t know that because Obama made the deal unilaterally and illegally, since he did not consult Congress.”
Clare Lopez, a former CIA operations officer and friend of Allen West's, wrote to him in an email “by uttering these words on the grounds of the WH, Bergdahl (the father) sanctified the WH and claimed it for Islam. There is no question but POTUS knows this.”
But Ben Armbruster of Think Progress mocked the many different people who are trying to dissect the anatomy of why Bergdahl would utter the phrase. He wrote “We should note that, if Lopez’s analysis were right, the White House was likely already ‘claimed’ for Islam long ago — in December 1805, at an Iftar dinner hosted by President Thomas Jefferson.”
The real reason for the debate over the phrase stems from the different posts by Bergdahl in the past.
A recent tweet from Bergdahl, which was quickly taken down, had him writing, “I am still working to free all Guantanamo prisoners. God will repay for the death of every Afghan child, amen!”
According to the blaze.com, “On June 1, he then tweeted a 2012 video report by the Guardian about Tunisians being held at Guantanamo Bay. 'Ten years in Guantanamo: Tunisian families hope for loved ones’ release,' the tweet said.”
