If a new WSJ/NBC News poll is accurate, the fallout from the flood of negative media coverage of Bridgegate has been even more dramatic than expected. Christie’s steep drop in the polls has largely come from moderates and Democrats, his positive rating dropping by half for both demos and his negatives more than doubling.

Christie’s ratings before the scandal were positive overall, with 33% viewing him positively, while only 17% viewed him negatively. Now that overall rating has flipped, with 22% positive, 29% negative. As The Wall Street Journal reports, the most dramatic shifts in the polls come from moderates and Democrats:

The sharp drop resulted in large part from a steep slide with political moderates. In October, 44% of moderates viewed Mr. Christie positively, while 13% viewed him negatively. In the latest Journal poll, his support from these voters has been cut in half, while 29% view him negatively.

Mr. Christie has suffered a similar erosion among Democrats. Thirty percent viewed him favorably in October, while 17% held a negative view of him. Now, those numbers are upside-down, with just 15% of Democrats viewing him favorability and 37% viewing him negatively.

Christie still maintains an overall positive rating with Republicans, though his negatives have risen to 20%.
