As Truth Revolt reported on Tuesday morning, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a federal order yesterday stating that Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis must issue same-sex marriage licenses or face criminal prosecution. But in an act of defiance, Davis started her shift Tuesday with a refusal to comply with the judge's decision and continued to refuse marriage licenses to several homosexual couples.
"To issue a marriage license which conflicts with God's definition of marriage, with my name affixed to the certificate, would violate my conscience," Davis said in a statement. "It is not a light issue for me. It is a Heaven or Hell decision."
Though she says she understands that she was elected by the people of Kentucky to serve them, she maintains that she cannot violate her conscience.
Now, Davis is being summoned to appear before a judge and explain why she shouldn't be fined or jailed for being in contempt of court, reports the Associated Press. The couples who have been denied the licenses asked their lawyers to plea for fines rather than jail time to expedite her compliance.
In the AP report, two men were denied a marriage license for a fourth time by Davis on Tuesday. They told her they weren't leaving until they have one. Davis responded back, "Then you're going to have a long day."
Shouts from her supporters could be heard: "Praise the Lord! Stand your ground." Others shouted, "Do your job!"
It is also noted that Davis was elected as a Democrat last November, taking over duties from her mother who previously served as clerk in Rowan County for 37 years. Her son is also on staff. Since she is an elected official, she can only be impeached, which couldn't begin until next year, or sooner through a costly special session, according to the report.
