We can't think of a less fitting way to honor to the memory and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King than having race-hustler Al Sharpton commemorate the occasion with a self-serving speech.
Dr. Martin Luther King brought dignity and pause to the fight for Civil Rights at a dark period in American history. And, while we certainly cannot speak on his behalf, it is likely that the reverend would be appalled at the divisiveness brought to bear by President Obama and would be equally repelled to see how his legacy has been twisted to suit the agenda of race-baitors.
Adding insult to injury, the NY Post reports that Sharpton's so-called tribute to Dr. King was less an homage and more an odd rant about racial stereotypes and chitlins:
The Rev. Al Sharpton went off on a bizarre rant Monday during a Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration in Harlem, appearing to invoke racial stereotypes during a discussion of public policy.
“A lot of folks don’t believe in public policy,” he said to a group at his National Action Network’s headquarters. “But this is not their holiday. This is Dr. King’s day. This ain’t your birthday. And Dr. King was about public policy.
“On your birthday, we’ll eat chitlins and watermelon and drink some sweet iced tea because that’s what you do,” he said. “But on his birthday, on his holiday, we do what King does. We’re going to march. We’re marching about minimum wage. Fifteen-dollars-an-hour minimum wage.”
The comments came during Sharpton’s annual King Day Public Policy Forum, where elected officials and community leaders joined to discuss furthering King’s dream in 2016.
Of course Sharpton claims he was just "intentionally mocking the stereotype," but if any person, especially a white person, had made similar comments the Left would be up in arms.
"I was intentionally mocking people who think that’s what we do on holidays," he told the Post. We're not sure that makes it any better and fail to see how comments about watermelon pays adequate tribute to MLK.
