Spin of the Week: GOP Creating Fear Of Immigrant Children

"I think it is shameful that in the Congress of the United States we see members of Congress engendering and creating fear—fear—of children.”

Though President Obama seemed like he’d wrapped up the Spin of the Week Award with his claim that he wasn’t going to the border because he’s not interested in “photo-ops" and "theater," a last-second entry pulled out an impressive eleventh-hour win.

The winner: The Democratic Party’s own Rep. Luis Gutiérrez (D-IL), who appeared on Democracy Now Friday to accuse Republicans of “engendering and creating fear of children” by considering changing the 2008 child trafficking law that delays deportation by giving special consideration to children from Guetamala, Honduras, and El Salvador—three of the countries from which many of the immigrant minors flooding the southern border hail.

After saying that all of the tens of thousands of unaccompanied minors were simply seeking asylum, Gutiérrez quickly shifted into blasting Republicans for warning against the health concerns and crime associated with immigrants coming from poverty-stricken countries. "Every time" conservatives like Reps. Gohmert, King, and Bachman talk about immigrants, Gutiérrez said, it’s only to speak about diseases and criminal behavior. Though they once voted for the 2008 Anti-Human Trafficking Law, said Gutiérrez, Republicans were now "shamefully" pushing to repeal the law by promoting "fear of children":

“I think it is shameful that in the Congress of the United States we see members of Congress engendering and creating fear—fear—of children. We should be protecting children, not creating fear of them."

The Republicans are certainly not the only ones who have recognized the unintended negative impact of the 2008 law. Even the New York Times (who tried to spin the issue into another opportunity to blame Bush) admitted that the Anti-Human Trafficking Act is "at the root" of the current unprecedented flood of unaccompanied minors, nearing 60,000 children so far this year, with projections of around 90,000 by year's end.

Gutiérrez’s comments begin at 10:54.
