Billionaire philanthropist Sheldon Adelson confirmed in a statement Thursday in the Las Vegas Review-Journal that he is the new owner of the newspaper.
A statement issued by the family noted:
“Our motivation for purchasing the R-J is simple. We believe in this community and want to help make Las Vegas an even greater place to live. We believe deeply that a strong and effective daily newspaper plays a critical role in keeping our state apprised of the important news and issues we face on a daily basis.”
While Adelson is perhaps best known as a mega-Republican donor, he is a major donor to countless charities via the Adelson Family Foundation, and he and his wife Miriam help many via The Adelson Medical Research Foundation (AMRF), which provides funding for medical research including support for an estimated 200 scientists, medical clinicians and researchers, as well as 70 medical institutions.
Adelson was born into a poor immigrant family, the son of a Boston cab driver, and grew up sleeping in the same room as his whole family. He has noted that he is “not a rags to riches story – because we couldn’t afford to buy rags.”
These are the stories which epitomize the greatness of American opportunity. His success is admirable, and Sheldon Adelson – thankfully a mega-influential political donor – will ensure – as his statement noted that the Las Vegas community will continue to receive “…a journalism product that is second-to-none and will continue to invest in the paper to achieve this goal."
Maybe this will be one newspaper that doesn't spin against American interests.
