On Monday's Morning Joe on MSNBC, Al Sharpton joined with Chicago protesters in calling for Mayor Rahm Emanuel to step down amid what he calls a "crisis with steroids" in relations between the black community and police in the city.

As The Washington Times notes, while protesters are circulating petitions for his resignation and chanting "Rahm's got to go in 2016," the mayor is away with his family in Cuba for vacation. 

But here in the U.S., Sharpton's criticism, and yet another instance of Chicago police shooting unarmed suspects, has ensured that the mayor's reception upon his return will not be all that warm.

Sharpton was asked about how this will impact Emanuel's mayorship on the Monday morning program:

I mean, I cannot, for the life of me, imagine how he could not know how this further imperils it. Unless he's sitting, wherever he is, writing out his resignation. 

The latest case of police shooting in Chicago involved a 55-year-old "grandmother," as Sharpton explained, and a 19-year-old male who were fatally shot by police after responding to a domestic disturbance. Upon hearing of the incident, Emanuel released a statement that said "serious questions" about this shooting warrant an independent investigation and called for "real changes within our police department." 

This, along with the protests and other shootings over the weekend, angered Sharpton, who said a quick end to the vacation would've been more appropriate to this "crisis with steroids:"

 You are in the middle of a recall vote, they are circulating petitions in Chicago to recall you, the state legislature is going to have to deal with it and you don’t even come back? 

Sharpton's assessment also included what could be misconstrued as a description of himself, as one with much experience with crises on steroids:

This is the height of either insensitivity or lack of intelligence or arrogance, or a reasonable combination of all three.
