Last Wednesday in Omaha, Nebraska, a work van driven by an illegal alien crashed and burst into flames, killing a 58-year-old father of three riding in the cargo area. The driver, Nemias Garcia-Velasco, 32, was drunk and traveling at 100 mph. Police say he lost control and hit a guardrail, which vaulted the van into a concrete bridge support, rolled, and then caught fire. A 16-year-old passenger in the front seat, Jesus Gonzalez, was treated for minor injuries and released. Garcia-Velasco is charged with motor vehicle homicide, DUI, reckless driving, and driving without a license. He faces 20 years in prison.
Garcia-Velasco, pictured above with burns to his face, is from Mexico and has been deported from the United States seven times. In 2009 and 2011, he was forced out of the country, the other five he left “voluntarily,” according to Daily Mail. It’s also noted that Garcia-Velasco was convicted of having false citizenship documents just before the crash.
Garcia-Velasco hit .243 on the blood-alcohol test — three times the legal limit — and told police he had consumed 12 beers starting the night before and into the next day. Bail was set high at $2 million so he couldn’t make bail and try and leave the country.
Passenger Silvano Torres was pronounced dead at the scene and had been riding unrestrained in the cargo area of the van. His girlfriend said Torres was properly documented to be in the U.S. and had been in Omaha for the last six years. He was father to two daughters and a son. The girlfriend didn’t know Garcia-Velasco.
Garcia-Velasco, Torres, and Gonzalez were leaving a roof-patching job. Torres texted his girlfriend and said it had gotten too hot to continue working. She said she spent two days texting and calling Torres back and only found out about the crash after seeing a burning van on the news and knew it was the one Torres used for work.
This isn’t the first drunk driving incident involving an illegal alien in Omaha. On January 31, 2016, a then-19-year-old alien from Honduras was street racing under the influence and rear-ended a 21-year-old woman so hard, she died from her injuries. She had just graduated college the day before.
During the campaign, Donald Trump used the Mejia case to bolster his immigration reform platform. Trump criticized authorities in Nebraska, which has a few sanctuary counties, for not cooperating with ICE and the failure’s within the federal agency to issue a detainer on Mejia so he could be properly dealt with as an illegal alien.
Does anyone else see the pattern here?
