In a narrow Thursday vote, the United States Senate took aim at Planned Parenthood to remove federal dollars from feeding the abortion giant. Voting 54-46, Republicans inched-out Democrats who strongly favor sending taxpayer dollars to the organization to the tune of $450 million annually.
The H.R. 3762 bill, Restoring Americans' Healthcare Freedom Reconciliation Act of 2015, goes after President Obama's signature legislation, stripping it just short of repeal. Not only does the bill remove federal funding from Planned Parenthood for one year, but it also takes away the requirement that individuals must maintain minimum health coverage, as well as repeals employers from being forced to provide coverage to employees.
But what Republicans will take the most heat for is its direct shot at Planned Parenthood, which will continue the accusations of the right's so-called war on women. However, the bill includes exceptions for organizations to perform abortions in the cases of rape, incest, or threat of the mother's life. It also has a built-in rejection of any attempt by Democrats to restore funding. But showing there is absolutely no war against women's health care, the bill increases the funding for often overlooked community health centers that cater to women, especially in the low-income bracket, that have been largely ignored because of the favor granted to Planned Parenthood.
Yet, any call to celebrate the repeal of Obamacare is virtually null, as Obama will in fact veto this bill -- something Republicans, lacking the majorities to override the president, knew going in. But with an election year on the horizon, the GOP is sending its message loud and clear -- with the right balance of power, the country can head back in the right direction.
