Former Secretary of Health and Human Services and current president of The Clinton Foundation Donna Shalala, 74, suffered a stroke Tuesday evening following a meeting of foundation group The Clinton Global Initiative, according to a statement released by President Bill Clinton and his daughter Chelsea.

Shalala was still with her colleagues at the time of the stroke and received immediate medical care. The Clintons said that the "initial reports are very encouraging."

It was this year that Shalala took over as president at the Foundation. She was previously the president of the University of Miami and chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In June of 2008 she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom at the same time as Dr. Ben Carson by President George W. Bush "For her leadership and for her determination to ensure that all Americans can enjoy lives of hope, promise, and dignity."
