From our Credit Where Credit is Due Department: Daily Mail editor Piers Morgan, not exactly a fan of conservatives or Donald Trump, penned a column Monday in which he conceded that Trump's "absolute mastery" of social media and his skillful manipulation of the "dumb" news media contributed greatly to his presidential election victory.
Morgan congratulated the mogul on his “direct” and “authentic” Twitter communication with voters, despite how “rude and offensive” his tweets may have been. Morgan said that these controversial and outrageous "antics" forced the media to stay focused on Trump in a perpetual cycle of coverage:
I am in awe of his absolute mastery of the medium… I’m also flabbergasted at just how dumb much of the American media has been, and continues to be, in letting Trump play them in such an obvious way. Every time they throw their high-minded journalistic toys out of their strollers at one of his tweets, Trump wins. His brand thrives on the oxygen of TV coverage, newspaper headlines and the media’s faux outrage. It always has.
Morgan went on to say that Trump’s social media style gave him an edge over competitor Hillary Clinton in that he came off as dynamic and incendiary while she remained reserved and “uninspiring.” Morgan also opined that now that he is the President-elect, Trump no longer needs to heed requests from the media or from “pompous New York and Washington elites” to act presidential.
"‘Why should I listen to any of them?’ [Trump] asks himself, ‘when I won by ignoring their advice throughout the election?’ I couldn’t agree more. The whole point of Trump’s tweets is that they are as far removed as humanly possible from the way any ‘normal’ president or politician would ever speak in public.”
Morgan ended his column by encouraging Trump to keep on infuriating critics and never stop tweeting.
