An NYPD officer was killed and another injured in a shootout on Friday afternoon in the Bronx.

Sgt. Paul Tuozzolo, 41, was struck in the head and chest, according to The New York Daily News, after a home invasion call turned into a shootout. The second officer is in the hospital with a bullet wound in his right leg but is expected to survive.

The robbery suspect, 35-year-old Manuel Rosales, broke into an apartment believed to be that of his estranged wife. According to Fox News, Rosales had 17 previous arrests. Seventeen. He was carrying multiple firearms and fired at the officers from his SUV where he was struck and killed in the shootout.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said, “The city is in mourning, the whole family of the NYPD is in mourning.”

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said,

“Every day, the brave men and women of law enforcement selflessly serve our communities to keep the rest of us safe. Today, a sergeant in the New York City Police Department has made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, and another officer is undergoing treatment. My deepest sympathies are with the families of the officers involved in today's tragedy in the Bronx, and with Commissioner O'Neill and the NYPD as they cope with the loss of one of their own."

Tuozzolo was a 19-year veteran with the department. He leaves behind two young children.
