In their desperation to smear Donald Trump as unfit for the office of the presidency, first the mainstream media accused him of being at best senile and at worst mentally ill. They still scrutinize Trump in vain for evidence of it. Then they waited with baited breath for the results of the President's recent health exam, praying that it would reveal some weak link in the 71-year-old which they could seize upon to portray Trump as physically unfit. Instead, he was given a clean bill of health, both physical and mental, and the media embarrassed themselves in an hour-long interrogation of Trump's doctor for anything, anything, they could use to undermine his presidency. They came away empty-handed.
But the leftist activists at the purported news weekly Newsweek refused to give up. And the result is the silliest non-story yet about Trump's lack of fitness.
In a desperate piece comically titled "President Still Taking Hair Loss Drug Even After Research Revealed It Causes Erectile Dysfunction and Depression," Newsweek wrings its hands over the fact that Trump has "continued to take the hair-loss drug finasteride, even after a succession of new studies showed that it is linked to side effects including chronic erectile dysfunction and depression."
The intrepid reporters at the magazine note that "the president’s current physician, Dr. Ronny Jackson, didn’t reveal whether Trump was still taking finasteride. However, finasteride is listed on the third page of Dr. Jackson’s report."
Newsweek noted ominously that a May 2017 paper in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine focused on men aged 66 or older found that finasteride "significantly increased" the "risk of self-harm and depression. Trump is currently 71."
Maybe Newsweek is concerned that the President might start cutting himself or listening to Goth music. More likely they are hoping against hope that the drug will unbalance him enough to get him removed from office.
The short, insubstantial article concludes with the admission that "[t]here's no guarantee that Trump is or isn't experiencing finasteride's side effects; just that they're a possibility." And Newsweek is clinging to that possibility like a drowning man to a life preserver.
We suspect the only ones feeling impotent and depressed these days are at Newsweek and elsewhere in the news media
