Rap mogul Irv Gotti, founder of Murder Inc Records, has a new hip-hop drama series on BET titled Tales and the first episode started off with a literal bang.
According to Breitbart, the episode was written as a sort of retelling of NWA’s cop killer anthem F*** Tha Police, but with the races reversed. That is, a black cop shoots a young, white boy. To further drive this reversal narrative, the episode ends with a white man lynched from a tree.
BET describes the two-hour premiere: “[It] focuses on the controversial killing of a young white boy at the hands of two Black police officers and a district attorney’s struggle to convince the lone witness to testify in court.”
Gotti posted two teasers on Instagram with an explanation of the final scene, saying maybe if people saw this happening to white people, they would actually care when it happens to blacks:
He said similar things in an interview with NBC News:
“What made me do the race reversal is the simple fact I love this movie called A Time To Kill with Sam Jackson where Matthew McConaughey plays this lawyer and at the end of the movie he depicts a girl, 12 year old girl, who gets beaten and brutally raped and beaten and then he says ‘Imagine she’s white.’ It also came behind the concept of ‘Hey, how would you like it if that was done to you?’ All these things we know doesn’t happen to white people.
“Making it happen to white people, it makes you feel a little different. It hits you differently and hopefully it hits everyone differently and then they will understand that most of what I’m portraying really has happened to black people. Hopefully it hits home and it starts the dialogue and people talking about all of these bad things.”
Gotti also hoped the violent images would show viewers “how black people are living.”
TMZ posted the ending scene online which shows white people attacking black cops — definitely the alternate reality we’ve seen across the country:
