A statue of Christopher Columbus was vandalized at a park near the Bronx on Tuesday. A resident walking by saw the head of the Italian explorer busted on the ground.
“It’s very upsetting that American values have sunken to the level they are today,” said Pat Gamberdella. “It’s unfortunate because I did go up there and I did see it all smashed.”
According to Channel 4, the bronze-colored bust greeted visitors at Columbus Memorial Park but ended up next to a plastic bag. Investigators are looking at two possibilities: “the work of juveniles overnight,” or “it could be fallout from the deadly protests and counter-protests over a Confederate statue in Charlottesville, Virginia earlier this month.”
Could be? This is one of several Columbus statues to be vandalized in the last few weeks alone as leftists call for the erasure of history by any means necessary.
One resident that lives near the park told Channel 4 they’ve wanted the statue removed, but not vandalized.
“I think it should be taken down, but I don’t think going about it and defacing it is the way to do it,” a woman said. “That just makes the other side angry.”
Westchester County Executive Robert Astorino had a slightly different take: “We can’t just desecrate a monument to them just because you don’t like what they did. The statue craziness is getting absolutely ridiculous and must stop. We are a society of laws, not mob rule.”
