Rather than ask questions about her positions, vision and political agenda, when Mika Brzezinski began questioning potential Republican presidential candidate Carly Fiorina on Monday's Morning Joe, she went after Fiorina with claws bared. The MSNBC co-host didn't attack Fiorina for any of her policy positions but because the former Hewlett-Packard head pointed out Hillary Clinton's lack of accomplishments.
The interview started with Willie Geist asking a few questions about whether or not Fiorina intended to run for president, but soon Mika Brzezinski piped in to "protect the honor" of the former Secretary of State:
Brzezinski: I've been reading your comments about Hillary Clinton and you say she does not have a track record of accomplishments. Why do you say that?
Fiorina: Because she really doesn’t. She's had a lot of very impressive titles, but a position is just a position. It's all about what you do in it. And think her time in the position of Secretary of State is demonstrably one that lacks accomplishment. But that it also has some real blemishes on it. It's a problem when you mislead the American people for a month about what really happened in Benghazi. It's a problem when you believe that Vladimir Putin can be thwarted it's a problem when you believe by a red reset button. I've met Vladimir Putin; I’ve sat across the table from him. There is no way a red reset button will work. It's a problem when our relationship with Israel has deteriorated and it's a problem when terrorism is on the rise, not on the wane as she and the president continue on try convince the American people.
Brzezinski: I've been reading and listening to your criticisms of her which are quite searing and again focusing on her track record of accomplishment. And I’m just wondering, you talk about blemishes, you have an amazing round of accomplishments in your life, but someone could say it like this, you ran for Senate and lost. You worked for John McCain, you were moved off that campaign and he lost. You had a tenure at Hewlett-Packard that a lot of people describe as extremely rocky, destroying jobs, and destroying the company's reputation. Are you really the right person to be criticizing Hillary Clinton’s accomplishments or lack thereof?
Fiorina: Well, you clearly have been reading the Democratic talking points.
Brzezinski: I'm reading Fortune, "New York Times," I’m reading --
Fiorina: We accomplished a lot at Hewlett-Packard. We doubled the size of the company to almost $90 billion. We quadrupled the growth rate from 2% to 9%; we tripled the rate of innovation to 11 patents a day; we quadrupled cash flow; we went from lagging to leading in every product category and every market segment. And in technology, if you're lagging, you're failing. If you're leading, you're growing jobs and growing products, which we did. With regard to California, yes, absolutely I lost that general campaign. But I won more Republican votes, more Democratic votes and more independent votes than virtually anyone else running at any point in that cycle. That's how big California is and it's a demonstration of the fact that a conservative non-politician can reach beyond our party and talk with Democrats and independents alike.
So it continued, with Brzezinski pointing out that Fiorina was fired from Hewlett-Packard, which was true, but then again, Mika was fired from CBS News. Eventually she brought in financier Steve Rattner to help in the attacks (the full segment is embedded above).
In the end the viewers learned nothing about Fiorina but were reminded that Mika Brzezinski will protect Hillary Clinton at all costs, even to the extent of cheating the viewers out of an informative interview.
