In a piece called “Once an Enemy of Bill, Now a Friend of Hillary,” The New York Times reported Tuesday that David Brock, founder of Media Matters and American Bridge, is launching his new operation, "Correct the Record," created to defend Hillary Clinton in her 2016 presidential bid.
The NYT piece retells one of the left’s favorite stories, Brock’s supposed conversion from conservatism muckraker, which included dirt-digging on Bill Clinton in the ‘90s, to liberal media hawk and founder of two organizations that together brought in $25 million in donations last year.
When he took the stage to kick off the new pro-Hillary initiative, Brock provided his “part confession” highlighting his own role in an attack on Hillary’s husband two decades ago, calling what he had been at the center of “a conservative-funded ‘dirt-digging operation into the Clintons’ past.’”
He warned of a similar type of animus toward Mrs. Clinton as she contemplates another run for the presidency. On one hand, he said, there already exists “a voracious news media hunting for any Clinton crumb, and on the other, well-funded anti-Clinton mudslinging operations that feed the beast.”
As an example, Brock pointed to Republican Rand Paul, the “poster boy for this retro strategy,” who Brock blasted for recently resurrecting the Lewinsky scandal. (Correct the Record's website currently features several pieces focused on Paul.)
Now Brock is prepared to fully atone for his sins against the Clintons with his new “dirt-digging operation,” Correct the Record. The new American Bridge initiative certainly doesn’t come as a surprise, as Brock has been collecting millions from Clinton supporters for years for Media Matters and super PAC American Bridge.
The “super PAC” Mr. Brock founded, American Bridge, has tapped into a rich network of Clinton supporters. Among them, according to federal disclosures, are George Soros; Steve Bing; Stephen M. Silberstein, a Bay Area entrepreneur; and Susie Tompkins Buell, a friend of Mrs. Clinton’s based in San Francisco.
Just last year, Bill Clinton helped Brock by delivering a keynote address at fundraiser for his biggest donors. As the Times notes, one person who attended the event said Brock thanked the Clintons for “giving me the gift of forgiveness.”
