On Friday's Real Time on HBO, host Bill Maher expressed shock that after the surprising defeat of House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, a Jew, now almost all of the Republicans in Congress are Christian and white.
Maher stated:
This is an amazing fact -- there are 278 Republicans in Congress. They are now all Christian and all white except for one black senator who was appointed. So this is an entirely Christian, white party.
And if that is not bad enough for Maher, he is concerned over the self-segregation of America, where, as Maher says, "Democrats and Republicans don't believe anything that the other one says -- they think the other one actually is dangerous. Which is half true."
Then, Maher rattles off some "statistics" that show Democrats and Republicans are also physically segregated: conservatives want bigger houses further away from cities, liberals would take a smaller home as long as they live in the city. Conservatives want to live next to people that share the same religion, while liberals do not. Ethnic diversity is more important to liberals than conservatives. They even eat at different restaurants -- conservatives eat at Cracker Barrel.
Maher asks his panel, "Isn't that scary that we're segregating like that?"
