Now that comedian Louis C.K.’s career has imploded after he admitted to exposing himself and masturbating in front of female comedians who “admired” him, his enablers are surfacing — fellow male comedians who ignored the allegations and defended their friend and mentor.

The Daily Beast posted footage from May of last year showing Jon Stewart, that stalwart of moral posturing, laughing off the allegations and defending his co-worker of three decades.

“What a difference 18 months can make,” writes Matt Wilstein of The Daily Beast. “When Stewart was asked about the Louis C.K. rumors in 2016, his jokey response said a lot about the culture of complicity that is just now starting to crumble.”

Stewart was a guest on former Obama advisor David Axelrod’s podcast, which in this case was recorded before a live audience. A questioner came to the mic and asked Stewart if he had any comment on the rumors that were circulating at that time about Louis C.K.'s sexual harassment of women.

“Whoa, wait, what?” Stewart said.

He laughed out loud when the man added he had read about them on Gawker and Twitter. That’s because Stewart didn’t find those sources reputable and is someone who has never signed up for a Twitter account.

Stewart was dumbfounded and offered this response:

“I don’t know what you’re talking about but — I can’t really answer. I don’t know what to say.

“All I can tell you is I’ve worked with Louis for 30 years and he’s a wonderful man and person and I’ve never heard anything about this. We’ve all known Bill Cosby was a prick for a long time, so I don’t know what to tell you. But I didn’t know about the sexual assault, but you’re right, it’s important.”

Axelrod quickly ended the show.

So far, Stewart has responded since the clip has resurfaced.
