Hollywood Harassment Roundup: November 1

Ratner, Hoffman, and a Spacey Update

Hollywood sex scandals just keep on coming! Let's check in to see who's been misbehaving lately (allegedly!). Here's a roundup of the latest allegations and accusations.

Dustin Hoffman

One Anna Graham Hunter says that Hoffman, now 80 years old, grabbed her buns and said something vulgar. In 1985. This allegedly happened when she was a 17 year-old intern working on his play Death of a Salesman. Hoffman responded by saying "I have the utmost respect for women and feel terrible that anything I might have done could have put her in an uncomfortable situation." While bun-grabbing is decidedly inappropriate, conflating this kind of behavior with Weinstein's or Spacey's is problematic. We need some kind of perv rating system.

Brett Ratner

On the perv scale, director Brett Ratner would be much worse. Allegedly. Six women have now accused him of being legitimately gross. Weinstein-level gross. Here are four which have been made public.

1. Natasha Henstridge said she was at his house when she was 19 years old (he was 20) with a group of people and fell asleep watching a movie. When she woke up, they were alone, so she tried to leave. He physically blocked the door so she couldn't leave, touched himself, and forced her to perform oral sex. "He strong-armed me in a real way. He physically forced himself on me," she said, "At some point, I gave in and he did his thing." He denies this.

2. Olivia Munn says she visited the set of his movie After the Sunset in 2004 when she was still an aspiring actress. She went to deliver him a meal and he masturbated in front of her. He also claimed publicly that he "banged" her a few times, but later admitted that was not true. When Munn saw Ratner at a party in 2010, he allegedly told her that he masturbated to pictures of her. What a guy! He disputes this, too.

3. Actress Jamie Ray Newman alleges that she and Ratner met on a first-class flight where he switched seats to be next to her. On the flight, she says, he loudly described sex acts he wanted to perform on her. He says that's ridiculous.

4. Katherine Towne, also an actress, says she met Ratner at a party in 2005 at which he aggressively came on to her and even followed her into the bathroom. His assistant subsequently called her to follow up for months. Guess what? Ratner says this didn't happen, either.

Kevin Spacey

You probably heard that he was accused of trying to seduce a 14-year-old boy some 30 years ago and then came out as gay in his...I guess he's calling it an apology? His Netflix show House of Cards was then put on notice that it would be cancelled at the end of its upcoming season, and it's now been suspended indefinitely. But that's so 24 hours ago.

Now, British barman Daniel Beal has said that Spacey exposed himself in 2010 and then paid him to keep quiet. He allegedly flashed the then-19-year old, made a comment about how impressive he is, and tried to pull Beal's hand towards him. Spacey then followed Beal back to work and gave him a £5,000 watch. "Looking back," Beal says, "I realize it was to keep me quiet." He also says Spacey would "touch (his) hand in a weird way," invited him back to his room, and tried to manipulate him.

That's the Hollywood sexual assault roundup for November 1. Hopefully there won't need to be another update later today but the floodgates are open now.
