Two women’s advocacy groups paid for “#GOODELLMUSTGO” banners to fly over three NFL stadiums prior to games Sunday, with another set to fly prior to the Monday night game. The message was a continuation of the National Organization of Women president Terry O’Neil’s call for NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to resign over his handling of the Ray Rice domestic abuse charges.
The two women’s groups, NOW and Ultra Violent, paid for the banners to fly over the stadiums in Cleveland, New York, and San Francisco Sunday, with a forth to fly before the game in Indianapolis Monday.
When NOW first called for the head of Goodell, Rush Limbaugh decried the move as faux outrage, arguing that feminist groups were simply seizing on another opportunity to tear down the (overly masculine) league via orchestrated outrage that never seems to materialize when a liberal is involved.
The NFL suffered another devastating PR blow late last week when MVP-winning running back Adrian Peterson turned himself in for injuring his son while attempting to discipline him with a stick.
Despite the strong public reaction to both Rice and Peterson, however, some fans continued to show their support for the embattled players, both men and women wearing the two stars’ jerseys to games Sunday.
