Gohmert Rips Boehner’s Omnibus Proposal

“If we aren’t faithful now, I don’t see [the American people] turning back to us.”

Speaking on the Ben Shapiro Show Wednesday, Texas Republican Rep. Louie Gohmert questioned Speaker John Boehner's plan to pass a fully-funded omnibus budget package and strategy for pushing back against the president’s executive action on immigration.

Shapiro led into the segment (begins at 14:55 mark) by explaining that Speaker Boehner told the GOP caucus Wednesday that  he wants to pass a fully-funded omnibus package through next September, with the funding for Obama’s “executive amnesty” expiring in March. Boehner’s “asinine” proposal, argued Shapiro, should be replaced by full funding through only January, at which point the GOP could pass each department separately without risk of a government shutdown—what Boehner claims he wants to avoid.

Gohmert agreed with Shapiro's deep skepticism about Boehner’s proposed action, noting that one of the major flaws in the approach is how quickly the Obama administration is moving on the order, already working to hire 1000 new employees to process the millions of permits they will be handing out to illegal immigrants covered in Obama’s unilateral edict.

Gohmert: If we don’t do something before march, then the permits will be out there [...] And that’s when it’s going to be next to impossible to pull them back. We’ve got to act much, much more quickly than that.

Another failing aspect of Boehner's plan, Gohmert explained, was that trying to “holding the Department of Homeland Security hostage” with this administration wouldn’t work.

Gohmert: As most good hostage takers know, you don’t take a hostage that the other people would be willing to let you shoot. And the DHS, that would be like holding the Department of Defense hostage, like our leaders did back in 2011…

Later in the interview, Gohmert warned the GOP that it must be “faithful” to voters now or else America might not give them another chance in the future:

Gohmert: If we aren’t faithful now, I don’t see [the American people] turning back to us. If we don’t […] stand firm, I can understand them deserting us.
