FLASHBACK: When Mark Halperin Denounced Sexual Assault He’s Now Accused Of

Rules are for us, not for him.

Another one bites the dust in the windfall of sexual harassers in powerful positions. A handful of women have come forward to share tales of receiving unwanted sexual advances and touching from veteran journalist Mark Halperin.

CNN chronicled the stories of five women Halperin, 52, harassed while he was at ABC News:

The stories of harassment shared with CNN range in nature from propositioning employees for sex to kissing and grabbing one's breasts against her will. Three of the women who spoke to CNN described Halperin as, without consent, pressing an erection against their bodies while he was clothed. Halperin denies grabbing a woman's breasts and pressing his genitals against the three women.

The women who worked with Halperin and who spoke with CNN did not report to Halperin. However, Halperin made many decisions about political coverage at ABC News, and had a voice in some critical personnel decisions. None of the women have said, though, that he ever promised anything in exchange for sex, or suggested that he would retaliate against anyone.

Another journalist spoke out once the CNN story broke. Emily Miller from One America News Network said on Twitter:

“To be clear, I was NOT one of the victims in this story about Mark Halperin. I was ANOTHER junior ABC employee he attacked. #MeToo.”

“I did not report Halperin to ABC because I thought I was the only one, and I blamed myself, and I was embarrassed and I was scared of him.”

These allegations are sure not to be the last which makes what Halperin said on Twitter five years ago all the more hypocritical:

That tweet swung back around to haunt him just in time for Halloween.

And now, Halperin finds himself out of work at NBC, his publisher Penguin, and HBO, where his book Game Change, about the 2008 presidential election, was turned into a movie starring Julianne Moore as Sarah Palin.

Halperin released the following statement:

"During this period, I did pursue relationships with women that I worked with, including some junior to me. I now understand from these accounts that my behavior was inappropriate and caused others pain. For that, I am deeply sorry and I apologize. Under the circumstances, I'm going to take a step back from my day-to-day work while I properly deal with this situation."

We await the fall of another giant real soon.
