FLASHBACK: Stephanopoulos: You Give to Clintons With 'Hope' It's 'Going to Lead to Something'

"everybody also knows when those donors give that money to President Clinton or someone ... there’s a hope that that’s going to lead to something”

In an April 28 interview on the “Daily Show," ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos told Jon Stewart that "everybody... knows" that those who give donations to the Clintons "hope that that's going to lead to something."

Stephanopoulos and ABC News have come under fire after revelations that the chief anchor gave $75K to the Clinton Foundation without disclosing that information despite reporting on it multiple times ,including a partisan grilling of "Clinton Cash" author Peter Schweizer.

Since the revelation of his contributions, Stephanopoulos' comments during an interview with Jon Stewart seems particularly unfortunate for the embattled anchor. When Stewart brought up the scandal surrounding the Clinton Foundation and quid pro quo arrangements with donors, the former Clinton adviser made the following comment:

STEPHANOPOULOS: I read the book that this is based on, "Clinton Cash," and I actually interviewed the author on Sunday. This is a tough one because when you actually look closely at it,[Schweizer] even says, there’s no evidence of any direct action taken on behalf of the donors. But everybody also knows when those donors give that money to President Clinton or someone, they get a picture with him, there’s a hope that that’s going to lead to something—and that’s what you have to be careful of.
