Despite having media mogul Jeff Zucker as the new president and high-profile hosts such as Anderson Coooper and Piers Morgan, CNN was not able to rise to the top in 2013. Their ratings posted a 20-year low in the primetime 8-11pmET slot.
When compared with 2012, they were flat in total viewers and down -2% amongst 25-54 year olds in total day, according to Media Bistro. This "total day" figure helped them barely beat out MSNBC for second place.
Where CNN found its best ratings this year was its original programming like "Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown." This is where Zucker wants to take CNN as he sees this type of programming as the future for the broadcast company. In fact, he has stated that he wants "more shows and less newscasts" because "a news channel cannot subsist on news alone."
Unless you are Fox News and are number one for the 12th straight year.
