This week's presidential address is all about bringing America's workplace to the 21st Century, and that means President Obama wants to provide working families their basic rights -- family leave, childcare and flexibility.

On Monday, the White House will host a summit for working families where business leaders and workers will discuss the many challenges facing working parents. Topics will include making paid family leave "available to everyone," making childcare affordable, especially with early childhood education, and allowing flexibility for workers to take "a few hours off" to have school meetings or work from home when a child is ill.

"That's good for business," says Obama. And that is something he says America is falling behind with other countries.

"Only three countries in the world report that they don't offer paid maternity leave. Three," Obama said. "And the United States is one of them. It's time to change that." And with many individuals saying no to jobs that are hard on their families, Obama said other countries fare better by providing their workers both "needs" so that no one has to choose between work and family.

Obama pledged to continue rallying for businesses. He says he takes it personally:

As the son and grandson of some strong women who worked hard to support my sister and me. As the husband of a brilliant woman who struggled to balance work and raising our young ladies when my job often kept me away. And as the father of two beautiful girls, whom I want to be there for as much as I possibly can – and whom I hope will be able to have families and careers of their own one day.

Family leave. Childcare. Flexibility. These aren’t frills – they’re basic needs. They shouldn’t be bonuses – they should be the bottom line.
