In advance of President Trump’s State of the Union address on Tuesday, in which he will undoubtedly tout his plans for immigration reform and be reamed for it afterward, we thought it would be good to remind our readers that the Left’s favorite former presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama both did the same thing to great fanfare in contrast.
If you can believe it, Clinton used the culturally “insensitive” term “illegal alien” in his 1995 SOTU speech:
“All Americans, not only in the states most heavily affected, but in every place in this country are rightly disturbed by the large number of illegal aliens entering our country.”
Clinton chided that section of the population for stealing jobs from legal citizens and imposing large burdens on public resources. He promised to hunt them down and deport them with greater efficiency. Clinton’s word brought the lawmakers to their feet. When President Trump says something similar tomorrow night, don’t expect the same reaction.
Obama, too, had some tough talk for illegal immigrants in his 2013 SOTU address, calling on — of all things — strengthening border security, cracking down on illegal crossings, establishing responsible pathways to citizenship and sending those breaking the law to the “back of the line.” Did Donald Trump write that speech for him?
So, keep these words in mind when enraged leftists start mouthing off on Wednesday.
