There were more Hollywood elitists in one place than you could shake a stick at for the Hand in Hand hurricane relief telethon on Tuesday night. By droves, they left their climate-controlled mansions to pile into gas-guzzling limousines and SUVs that zoomed them across town to sit together in one room to take phone calls and solicit donations from home viewers. And it worked splendidly. Good-hearted people from all over raised $44 million to help victims of the hurricanes and flooding.
But of course the evening wasn’t without several moments where the mouthy celebs couldn’t resist turning the event political. R&B legend Stevie Wonder quipped that a person must be “blind or ignorant” to not believe in man-made climate change. That’s funny, because if true, he was surrounded by some of the biggest CO2 burners around, like Justin Bieber, George Clooney, and Leonardo DiCaprio. The amount of carbon footprints on that stage alone is mind-boggling!
It’s a hypocrisy we talk about a lot here on TruthRevolt. But the Daily Mail has actually put a number to it. The UK paper investigated just how much CO2 some of the celebs pump into the atmosphere as the live their jet-setting lifestyles, not to mention multiple mansions and other transportation habits:
Justin Bieber is calculated to have travelled at least 136,000 miles in a plane over the last year, environmentalist DiCaprio is believed to have done more than 87,000 miles while fellow actor Clooney did 61,000 miles.
Bieber was the biggest culprit, having flown on approximately 45 flights in the past 52 weeks.
His longest flight was from Australia to the UK at the beginning of July having been down under on his Purpose World Tour.
The 10,638-mile flight burned through a massive 1.8 tonnes of carbon dioxide alone in a year that stacked up against him in terms of his carbon footprint.
Trips to Germany, Dublin, Paris, Cape Town, Mumbai, Rio de Janeiro and to his homeland Canada meant he clocked up a staggering 136,947 air miles burning through 22.45 tonnes of CO2 since September 2016.
Keep in mind, the average American burns around 20 metric tons of carbon dioxide in a single year, and the world average is four tons.
Then there’s the globe-trotting DiCaprio, who has a penchant for big yachts and earning large amounts of sky miles in short periods of time:
The 42-year-old actor flew around 87,609 miles on various business trips and jaunts around the world which burned up 14.8 tonnes of carbon dioxide.
His longest trip was his return journey from California to the south of France where he enjoyed the iconic Cannes film festival.
In April, DiCaprio joined thousands of climate change protesters in Washington DC to mark President Donald Trump's 100th day in office.
Clooney had to fly in to attend the telethon, polluting our precious resources:
George Clooney spent around 61,448 in the air since September last year which included a long trip to Italy this summer.
He is thought to have flown 4,265 miles from Toronto to Los Angeles to attend Tuesday night's Hand in Hand: A Benefit for Hurricane Harvey Relief telethon at a cost of 720kg of CO2.
His total air time meant his carbon emissions from flying alone was 10.31 tonnes of CO2.
And the list goes on, with Beyonce and Cher pulling in a few less miles than the others. The Daily Mail noted about its study, “The total emissions only takes into account the flights the celebrities have taken and is likely to be astronomic when driving, pollution from their concerts or films and the electric in their homes are considered.”
Just imagine how much of the planet could’ve been saved had these climate change-lecturing celebrities refused to travel and instead donated all their transportation costs and budget for hair/clothes/makeup/band/staff/etc. But then, who would notice their charity?
