In its post-inaugural coverage, CBS News’ Bob Schieffer and Scott Pelley were left befuddled at what they had just heard from President Donald Trump.
Maybe that’s because they’re so used to hearing the president talk about himself a lot. Trump, on the other hand, gave it back to the people. He said such scary things like, “Buy American and Hire American.” Putting America first sounded like a foreign concept to the anchors.
Pelley put on his dramatic voice and said, “And the pendulum swings as it does throughout our history. This time, it swings toward a populist, isolationist philosophy.”
“Part of the American debate from the earliest days which has found its 21st-century voice in Donald Trump,” he added.
Pelley recoiled at Trump’s harsh dose of reality when he said too many factories are closed in America and too many are out of work. He focused in on Trump’s use of the phrase, “American carnage” and couldn't believe he'd say such a thing. He tossed it over to Schieffer for his reaction:
"I'm telling you this was very strong stuff, very strong stuff. I did not see any outreach either across the aisle, or even to his own party. I mean, he basically took the hide off everybody sitting on that platform, telling them that politicians of Washington have prospered while the people out there had suffered, and he said it's going to stop here and now."
How dare he give the power back to the people!
Schieffer continued in his confusion:
"He said 'We have enriched other governments and defended other borders while we failed to do that for our own borders.' That is part of all this, he's been talking about, is NATO obsolete? I mean, we're going to be unpacking this speech for — it will take us the rest of the day to get around to this. I’m not quite sure I've ever heard any inauguration speech quite like this one."
Schieffer added that people were looking for a “pivot” from Trump in this speech; essentially a move away from the kind of rhetoric that got him elected in the first place.
“This was Donald Trump,” Schieffer said with surprise.
Watch above.
