A new Vice News documentary highlights a blacks-only retreat that has opened in Costa Rica to give female minorities a safe space from white people. Men of all races are also excluded.
It’s called the Women of Color Healing Retreat which is billed as “a travel experience that emphasize[s] yoga, vegan food, political education seminars, and specifically ban[s] white people.” It was started by Andrea X (probably not her real last name), who says in the documentary that gentrification and racism caused her to leave the U.S. in 2014. It’s also mentioned that she lost her job at the time. The retreat leader used her personal savings to open up a “safe space” for black women. It costs over $2,000 to attend the retreat, but she says it’s a small price to pay to be away from whites, because black people are “suffering and suffocating” in America.
A Vice voiceover states:
“White Americans find themselves in white-only meetings and places all the time without even trying or noticing. When black people want a break from feeling like a minority, they often have to make an effort.”
It sounds like the “effort” is buy-your-own segregation.
Vice asked those in attendance if “white people [would] ruin this trip.” They answered with a resounding “yes.” They’d want their money back because they couldn’t be as open and honest around the yoga mats if white people were around. Hmmm, wonder what they say when the cameras aren’t there?
Andrea X says it’s not possible for her to have a conversation with a white person without “picking up” on their “microaggressions.”
“So, I just decided one day to eliminate white people from my personal life, and ever since then, my life has been way more breezy,” she says.
The Vice host implied that it was white people that “made” Andrea X leave the U.S. when it was of her own initiative. It’s of interest to note that she fled America while Barack Obama was in office, yet somehow, everyone at the retreat blames President Trump for the current race crisis (of they’re own making).
Andrea’s racism extends further for whites as she feels they shouldn’t even have passports to travel the world:
“[White people] didn’t push me out the [sic] United States because if that was the case, they could push me out of any of these countries, because they are here, they’re everywhere. You know, I feel like white people shouldn’t even have passports, because they’ve done enough — especially white Americans.
“Leave them in the United States, they do not need to come here. They need to stay in the United States [laughs].”
Andrea X’s tips for white people who are trying to be allies for blacks? She has none:
“My tip to white people is to let us have our space, let us have our room and go hang out with other white people. We’re okay. You’ve done enough damage.”
But get this predicament: the place where Andrea holds her retreat is owned by whites. So, Andrea and her business partner are investing over $100,000 to build their own black community on-site in the Costa Rican jungle, bringing to pass the once-theorized idea of Abraham Lincoln to repatriate blacks to countries outside of the U.S. after the Civil War. However, Andrea says she doesn’t want a government of any kind, “just a community of black people living here.”
Does Andrea find such a segregated space hypocritical? Not in the slightest. Her whites-free nation is totally different than the segregation of old.
It’s hard not to notice that none of these ladies is heading to inner-city Chicago or Baltimore to live among their own community. Wonder why that is?
