Jennifer Holliday is a Broadway legend most known for her Tony Award-winning role in Dreamgirls, but many hope her career dies after she agreed to perform for Donald Trump. But not just her career; they want the "Uncle Tom" dead, too.
Because Holliday decided to perform at a pre-inauguration concert featuring country star Toby Keith and conservative actor Jon Voight, the calls to boycott her music came fast. The progressive mobs wanted her career to plummet, told her to kill herself, and of course, threw out the expected “Uncle Tom” slam.
“It just really made my heart drop to my feet,” Holliday said. “How could I have this much hate spewing at me, and I haven’t even done anything?”
Holliday said that she viewed the whole thing not as “singing for Trump” but “singing for the people on the mall.”
Holliday supported Hillary Clinton during the election but said she’s sung for Ronald Reagan’s inauguration, both Bush inaugurations, and Bill Clinton’s inauguration with no issues. In her view, she was ready to “just get this done and then fight vigorously” later against Trump’s policies. But she learned the hard way that social justice warriors aren’t interested in compromise.
“I guess it’s not like those old days when political views were your own and you had freedom of speech,” Holliday added. “We live in a different time now, and a decision to go and do something for America is not so clear-cut anymore.”
The singer told the women on The View that most of the threats came from other black people. She broke down in tears telling them how she grew up in a mixed, middle-class neighborhood in Texas and was never called the N-word like she was on Twitter. Of course, Whoopi Goldberg blamed Trump for setting the standard on how Twitter users abuse others, even though the social media platform started well before Obama took office.
Holliday will no longer perform.
Other entertainers have been faced with a grieved public for agreeing to perform for Trump. TruthRevolt previously reported about Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli, who is a friend of Trump, backing out because he was getting “backlash” from his fans. But as it turns out, that backlash included death threats.
“Andrea is very sad to be missing the chance to sing at such a huge global event but he has been advised it is simply not worth the risk,” a source close to the singer said.
Despite the threats, Bocelli was determined to go ahead and sing but has been advised by his security team to stay away.
Boy, Obama’s legacy has really brought out the best in these people.
