Dr. Ben Carson clarified his equating of Obamacare to slavery to NBC's David Gregory on Meet the Press Sunday. Gregory played a clip from 2013 in which Carson said, "Obamacare is the worst thing that has happened in this nation since slavery…It is slavery, in a way." Gregory asked if Carson really wanted a legacy of putting the government on trial.

Even though Carson clarified his statement from the clip, the sensitivities of Gregory were heightened and he required further clarification. Carson assured him that he did not say that Obamacare was slavery, just similar to it. "I said in a way. In a way, anything is slavery that robs you of your ability to control your own life," said Carson.

In the clip, Carson explained that Obamacare "was never about health care" but "about control." He also clarified this for Gregory: "When you take the most important thing that you have, which is your health care, and you put that in the hands of government bureaucrats, I think you have done the wrong thing."

But Carson said not to take his word for it:

You go back and you look at the neo-Marxist literature, and look at what they say. You don't have to listen to what I say -- about taking control of health care of the populace and making the people dependent. This is not what America is about. Do I believe in health care for everybody? Absolutely. But I think there are much better ways to get there, which is to leave it here in the hands of patients and of doctors.

Although a favorite among Republicans as a presidential candidate, Carson told Gregory that running was never on his bucket list and said he would not say he absolutely would run or absolutely would not run until he was absolutely sure one way or the other.
