Atheist To Deliver Invocation At Town Hall Meeting

Atheist will quote from Declaration of Independence

A New York resident will become the first atheist in his town to deliver an invocation at a local Town Board meting Tuesday night.

Dan Courtney will open the meeting of the Greece, New York Town Board with a secular invocation after the town's ability to open meetings with a prayer was upheld in a May Supreme Court ruling, provided the town didn't discriminate based on religious beliefs.

Courtney was reportedly one of the first residents to sign up to deliver the opening prayer upon the ruling's release, and plans to quote from one of the country's founding documents:

A member of the Atheist Society of Rochester, Courtney, an engineer, said he plans to quote from the Declaration of Independence and call upon the common principles that unite all Americans.
