Chalk up another victory for the anti-fascist fascists.

Portland, Oregon’s annual 82nd Avenue of Roses Parade, a “multicultural event, complete with bands, community members, government officials, schools, classic cars and representatives of the Portland Rose Festival,” was all set to entertain families for the 11th year in a row this Saturday until a threat against participants caused its cancelation.

An e-mail sent to organizers threatened mob violence against the Multnomah County Republican Party if its members were allowed to march in the parade.

“We will have two hundred or more people rush into the parade into the middle and drag and push those people out as we will not give one inch to groups who espouse hatred toward LGBT, immigrants, people of color or others,” the e-mail sent from [email protected] said in part.

“You have seen how much power we have downtown and that the police cannot stop us from shutting down roads so please consider your decision wisely,” it continued. “In case the message was not clear to you this is a sanctuary city and state and we will not allow these people to spread their views in East Portland.”

One anarchist group called Direct Action Alliance planned on disrupting the parade and promoted it on Facebook, saying about Republicans, “They seek to intimidate and harass our Latinx, Muslim and LGBTQ+ neighbors and friends. Their Trump flags, their red MAGA hats and their hate group badges are all intended to normalize support for an orange man who bragged about sexually harassing women and who is waging a war of hate, racism and prejudice against our Muslim, Latinx, Black and Native neighbors.”

It's not clear if the e-mail threat originated from this group, but one of its members, Jacob Bureros, responded to the parade’s cancelation, ensuring they "prize" these family events:

We are disappointed that the Avenue of Roses Parade has been cancelled. As members of this community, we prize our neighborhood events and support events that promote community. Known members of neo-nazi and anti immigrant hate groups planned to attend the group that was being hosted by the Multnomah County Republicans at the parade. We intended to stand between them and those who they wanted to intimidate. We intended to block out their hate and shut down their violence.

In like manner, another fascist group, the Oregon Students Empowered, vowed to “shut down fascism” at the parade. They too were triggered by the possibility of seeing MAGA hats and Trump signs. And this is their picture on Facebook used to mobilize fellow anarchists:

A police spokesman said, “We were aware of threats to disrupt the Avenue of Roses Parade on Saturday and were prepared to provide a police response appropriate to the needs of the event, which has traditionally been a family-friendly affair.”

However, a festival spokesman said it was just too serious to let the parade go on:

We’re saddened by this turn so of events. With this political climate, the collateral damage is community events are being threatened. This is a nice community event. For political parties to use it as a playground is a very sad situation.

We are deeply disappointed that the agendas of these outside groups have so regrettably impacted East Portland and the 82nd Avenue community.
