60 Minutes Ratings Collapse with Obama Interview

Steve Kroft's heavily promoted interview with President Barack Obama on Sunday's episode of 60 Minutes suffered a disastrous ratings debacle. Compared to the 18 million viewers who tuned in to the news magazine the week before, only 9.2 showed up for the Obama interview.

Deadline Hollywood lays out the stark ratings free-fall:

With no football lead-in, CBS’ Sunday lineup fell from last week. As expected, the drop was steepest at 7 PM, with 60 Minutes (1.1) off by 69% from last Sunday, when it directly followed the game.”

Jim Hoft points out that in all of the media reports on the ratings collapse, the NFL is the only factor cited as a determining factor in the viewers' exodus.

The sympathetic news media is avoiding mentioning his name, instead they are blaming the lack of a football intro for the massive collapse in ratings Sunday night for President Barack Obama’s appearance on CBS’ 60 Minutes. Americans turned away from watching Obama even though he was being interviewed about the nation’s new war on ISIS.

Hoft has a point. Surely football viewership may have been a contributing factor, but to ignore the impact of "Obama Fatigue" is hardly telling the full story. In fact, take a look at the breakdown per network provided by TVbythenumbers. Last week, after the NFL game, 60 Minutes grabbed 18 million viewers but it was going head-to-head with NBC's Football Night in America and the Sunday night game. If the NFL crowd was so instrumental in bolstering last week's numbers, why didn't they flea CBS to watch the game on NBC?
