35-Cent 'Minimum Wage Fee' Appears on Dining Receipt

Minnesota cafe protests wage hike

Craig Beemer, owner of Oasis Cafe in Minnesota, is protesting the recent minimum wage hike in his state from $7.25 to $8 per hour by adding a "minimum wage fee" to customers' receipts, Fox News Insider reports.

Appearing on Fox & Friends, Beemer explained that rather than reduce his staff or raise the price on menu items, he would add a 35-cent fee to each tab. The bill also includes an explanation of why the fee is added in hopes that his customers can understand how policies affect local businesses in the state.

Beemer says half the backlash he has received from the public is from people who have "no clue" what employees make at his restaurant. Beemer estimates that this mandatory wage increase will cost his business $10,000 per year.

Beemer noted an increase in tips to his wait staff as many of his customers stand in solidarity with his decision.
