The parking garage where Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward met with FBI informant Mark Felt (codename: Deep Throat) between 1972-1973 during the Watergate scandal is slated to be torn down and replaced with an apartment complex.
The Wall Street Journal reports that a Virginia county board of five unanimously voted for the developer to demolish the structure and begin construction in 2017. Also promised in the agreement is for the historical marker that was added in 2011 to remain as well as working with the community for other ideas that could help memorialize the site for historical purposes.
According to the historical marker, Woodward and "Deep Throat" met in the garage six times to exchange information that exposed the Nixon administration as having obstructed the FBI's Watergate investigation, ultimately leading to President Richard Nixon's resignation in 1974.
In 2005, Felt outed himself as "Deep Throat."
